    Principal's Notice - Andrew Greenwood

    January 2021

     P/21/05

    Andrew Greenwood

It is with great sadness that I report the news of Andrew Greenwood’s recent passing.

Andrew has been a highly respected and much loved colleague in the School of Vocal Studies and Opera, making regular visits to the RNCM over recent years as a coach, and conducting three of the College’s recent main opera productions: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2015); La Vie Parisienne (2017), and Dialogues des Carmelites (2019).

Andrew will be very sadly missed by his many close friends and colleagues here at the RNCM and remembered fondly by the many staff, students and alumni of the College who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

I am sure everyone would wish to join with me in sending their sincere condolences to his family.

    Principal's Notice - Lucy Hale

    Principal's Notice - Lucy Hale

    January 2021

     P/21/04

    Lucy Hale

It is with deep sadness that I report the untimely death of composer Lucy Hale, on Monday 11 January at the age of 26.

Lucy joined the RNCM as an undergraduate student of Adam Gorb and David Horne in 2013, furthering her studies at postgraduate level with Emily Howard and Gary Carpenter and graduating with distinction in 2019.

Lucy achieved so much both during and after her studies, never letting her challenging personal circumstances stand in the way of her musical aspirations. Last year she was awarded a place on the RPS Composers programme and was set to write a new work for performance at Wigmore Hall as the 2020/21 Rosie Johnson RPS/Wigmore Hall Apprentice Composer. She also delivered workshops with young disabled people in Liverpool as an Associate Musician with Drake Music, and made history as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Rebound’s inaugural Young Composer-in-Association and Orchestras for All’s first Composer-in-Residence.

Everyone in the RNCM community viewed Lucy as a remarkable and extraordinary young woman with whom it was a pleasure and privilege to work. She balanced her talent and determination to pursue her chosen career path with humility and was committed to make the most of every opportunity available to her. She was also a powerful role model for her peers.

We were extremely proud to see Lucy flourish in her studies at the RNCM and go on to build the career she had so desperately wanted. She touched the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to know and work with her. Her music will live on, as will she in all our memories.

    David Jordan

It is with great sadness that I report the news of David Jordan’s recent passing.

David was formerly Director of Opera at the RNCM and RNCM Fellow. He will be remembered fondly by many staff and alumni of the College and I am sure everyone who worked with him would wish to join with me in sending their sincere condolences to his family.

Important Message from the Principal: National Lockdown

Important Message from the Principal: National Lockdown

    Dear all,

Following yesterday’s announcement from the Prime Minister, I wanted to reiterate some important points and to outline our current position regarding work and study.

This is a very difficult situation for everyone in the UK and I know that entering another national lockdown is disappointing and frustrating for many of you. Please be assured that we are working through how we can best ensure safety for our whole community whilst providing continuity for our students and we will keep you informed as plans progress.

It is our belief that present restrictions will be in place until at least mid-February, but we hope to receive and share further clarity after tomorrow (6 January) when Universities Minister Michelle Donelan chairs a Covid-19 HE Taskforce meeting.

In the meantime, please continue to follow all Government guidance regarding Covid-19 and note the restrictions that are in place at the RNCM:

Students: If you have not yet travelled to Manchester and are able to study online satisfactorily, please remain in your current accommodation. Those already in the city can continue to book practice rooms for self-directed study (personal practice, no ensembles) and access the building for essential services at this time. Access now includes Saturdays, which have previously been unavailable. Exceptionally, piano, percussion and drum kit students may access the building to make use of Zoom Room facilities if this is unavailable at home.

Further details relating to your programmes of study, including any changes to assessment arrangements, will be issued shortly by Registry. Please be assured that we plan to re-schedule postponed performance activities later in the academic year.

Staff: Please continue to work remotely while the national lockdown is in place. Exceptionally, staff who are unable to work from home may be granted access via the previous Green List system. Please let your line manager know in the first instance and they will confirm permission via Susan Baines (Deputy Principal (Operations)) for professional services staff, Manus Carey (Deputy Principal (Performance and Programmes)) and Dr Jennie Henley (Director of Programmes) for academic staff.

Important: Face-to-face teaching is not permitted within the building under any circumstances. All tuition must be via Zoom until further notice.

As always, please continue to monitor your College email account and to visit Moodle and the Intranet regularly for future updates.

    Thanks,

    Linda

Important Message for Students - Student Travel and Testing Following Tier 4 Announcement

Important Message for Students - Student Travel and Testing Following Tier 4 Announcement

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

Please find below a message from Michelle Donelan MP, Minister of State for Universities, clarifying student travel and testing during the winter break.

    Dear Student,

You will be aware that yesterday the government added Tier 4: Stay at Home to the COVID-19 restrictions and altered the Christmas relaxations. I am writing to you to confirm what this means for students who want to go home for the Christmas break but have not yet done so.

I know most students who were planning to go home will have done so by now in the student travel window that we created, but I wanted to give clarity and comfort to those who are yet to travel including student on clinical placements or with jobs in their university town etc. This government made a commitment that students could return home for Christmas and we are keeping it. To be clear any student can travel home once during the period 3 December 2020 and 7 February 2021. As previously stated, students will form part of the household they return to and will not count as a separate household. This remains the case for those who may be preparing to travel from or to a Tier 4 area. If you are planning to travel to somewhere outside the United Kingdom, you should check whether your destination country has any restrictions in place that may affect your plans.

If a COVID-19 test is available locally, through your university or through your host organisation if you are on a clinical placement, we would encourage you to take a test before you travel.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and cooperation with the measures we have put in place to enable you to continue your studies whilst at the same time managing the continuing risks COVID-19 presents to us all.

    Yours sincerely,

    Michelle Donelan MP
    Minister of State for Universities
