Saints vs. Sinners: A 'Phoney Genre' Unmasked?
The question of genre in the early modern period is not without its contradictions. In this paper I will consider some of these with particular reference to the genre known as the ‘motet chanson’. Its nomenclature has posed problems for commentators from the outset, and I will argue that it has done much to obscure the nature of those works to which it attaches, particularly in relation to a parallel genre with an even shorter history, the ‘combinative chanson’. My observations draw on questions of style, and manuscript and reportorial evidence. There will be live performance of two pieces by way of illustration and kicks.
