Inter-Library loan service
Inter-Library lending, by connecting people and resources, is a cornerstone of library activity that satisfies people’s thirst for knowledge – no matter where the required material is held…
About the process
The Inter-library loan service is available to all students and staff of the RNCM. This service seeks to provide access to material not held in the College’s library. We also supply our own material to other libraries and institutions.
To make a request you must complete an Inter-Library Loan/Document Supply Request Form with the details of the item you require. Please ask a member of staff at the library for a form. Completed forms must be submitted in the library and full payment made before your request can be processed. The fee for a request is non-refundable. Please attach an item reference for your request where possible.
Please check the catalogues of the University of Manchester John Rylands Library and Henry Watson Music Library, before you put in a request.
Charges
There is a 50p charge per volume borrowed or per article requested, this is non-refundable. If the item can only be provided by a particularly expensive source, then we will contact you and charge extra with your consent.
Renewals
Inter-Library Loans are a courtesy provided by the lending library. To ensure a good relationship with the lending libraries, items must be returned by the due date. Please be aware that ILL items can be recalled at any time and that renewals, which are charged for, are also subject to the agreement of the lending library.
Fines
Fines will be charged for overdue items; 10p a day. You will be invoiced for any copies which are lost or damaged on return. If the item is uncollected, the requestor will pay an administration fee of £7.50 for music and £5 for books and articles.
Care of Sets
Orchestral and choral music sets are used by many societies and institutions, so to help us promote and prolong the use of performance sets please take note of the following points:
Sets are loaned to an individual member; who alone is responsible for material borrowed. You must inform us if your representative changes. It is the representative’s responsibility to check the contents of the set at the time of issue and report any discrepancies therein to a member of staff immediately.
All items must be returned on time and in original condition; please be considerate as other people may be waiting for your item which they will expect to receive on time, complete and in good condition.
FAQs
How many requests can I submit?
Students are limited to 5 ILL requests per year, except MMus students who can make 8 and MPhil/PhD students and staff have unlimited requests
How does copyright affect my request?
UK copyright law states that you may receive photocopies of:
- One chapter or 5% of a book, whichever is the greater
- One article from an issue of a journal
If you require more than the prescribed limit you should ask to borrow the original item instead. Copyright law still applies so you will not be able to make copies yourself over the amount shown above.
How long does it take to receive the item that I have requested?
Straightforward requests for British Library material usually takes 6 working days. More complex requests (where little information has been provided) may take longer.
Times vary for the delivery of articles and books from institutions other than the British Library. Other UK libraries may take two weeks or longer and requests submitted to international libraries may take several months.
