    • Introduction

The RNCM’s Learning and Participation team connects with communities through a year-long programme of events. From the conventional to the extraordinary, we offer a range of exciting projects including full-scale musical productions from RNCM Youth Perform, inspirational children’s operas, and fun-filled family days.

Projects involve RNCM students and incorporate training, complementing the Professional Studies strand of their curriculum. The team has strong partnerships with schools, colleges and community groups across the North West and, whether with a school, youth group or family, the key aim is to make music accessible and relevant to all those they come into contact with.

You can read about our current projects and opportunities for RNCM students below. If you'd like to get involved, please contact Fiona Stuart communityoutreach@rncm.ac.uk, or call 0161 907 5281

      • RNCM Youth Perform

Established in 2009 with the support of Aimhigher Greater Manchester, RNCM Youth Perform is an open access musical theatre group for young people aged 13 - 19 who love to be on the stage. Through joining this group participants have the opportunity to become a better singer, dancer, actor....or all three!

With the help of RNCM students and Director Caroline Clegg (Feelgood Theatre / Opera North), Youth Perform members work towards performances which are staged at the RNCM, supported by our in-house technical and backstage staff. Past productions have included West Side Story, The Wiz and The Threepenny Opera.

RNCM students play a key role in the group's activities and are mentored by Caroline; it’s an ideal chance for you to develop workshop-leading skills and help give the young participants fantastic performance experiences.

The group rehearses every Wednesday evening at the RNCM from 6.30pm – 9pm. If you’re interested in getting involved during 2014/15 either as a vocal coach or accompanist, please email communityoutreach@rncm.ac.uk

        • Family Day

Set in a fun-filled environment, RNCM Family Days are a great way for people of all ages to get involved in music-making activities and see our students in action. FREE for children aged 16 and under, they involve everything from workshops and storytelling to film screenings and concerts..

          Forthcoming Family Days:

The next RNCM Family Day with Junior RNCM – BBC Ten Pieces – takes place on Saturday 21 March. It’s a special day of music for all the family to mark the BBC Ten Pieces initiative. Join musicians from the RNCM and Junior RNCM as they bring the building to life in a blaze of sound. .

We are always looking for RNCM students to assist with workshops on the day. If you'd like to get involved, please email communityoutreach@rncm.ac.uk

          • Children's Opera Project

Each year RNCM Engage brings local primary schools together with a composer and a team of RNCM students to stage a new musical production in our Theatre. The most recent project saw over 180 children from four different schools come to the RNCM for a performance of a new opera, Before the Storm.

With the help of composer Kate Pearson and RNCM students, who spent time visiting each school, the children wrote the script, composed the songs, and choreographed the action ready for two performances to packed audiences.

To learn more about our Children’s Operas and how you can get involved, please email communityoutreach@rncm.ac.uk
