Set up: Side chin in the chin rest rather than bony chin. The viola should be at 10 o'clock position . If you can feel your elbow against your tummy, that will tell you that something is wrong. Make sure you're covering your shoulder enough as well.
Slow scales: D major and G major, C major - each note is 4 beats long and body follows bow. This is great for practising and checking your position and what feels good.
