• Latest Updates about Safety

RNCM staff are involved in the Student Safety Group which brings together staff from the Manchester Universities, Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police to discuss and act on any issues affecting the safety of students.

Occasionally we will share relevant updates with you.

    Update Welcome Week, September 2024

Thieves will try and find a way to operate so please be vigilant.

If you see someone acting oddly/suspiciously let a member of staff/reception/concierge know. We do our own reconnaissance but we can’t be everywhere, so we rely on all staff and students to tell us if something doesn’t feel/look right.

Please don’t leave your valuables (especially your instrument) unattended in the café/bar, reception area, library, tutorial room or venue. It feels like a safe place but thieves are resourceful and they find ways of blending in with the crowd. If belongings are left unattended in public spaces, then they may be removed by our security staff. We don’t cover such valuables on our insurance. Some tips for when you are out and about:

    • Keep your mobile fully charged. Use the PIN facility and consider marking, tagging and tracking schemes.
    • Don’t flaunt your stuff. Keep valuables such as jewellery, in your pockets until you arrive at your destination. If you use your phone in the street, go into a shop or stand with your back to a shop window/wall and look around you whilst on the call. Thieves like the element of surprise.
    • Carry your laptop in a bag that doesn’t resemble a laptop bag. Avoid using back packs/sacks when in crowds as they can be cut open without you noticing – you can buy anti-cut ones.
    • Keep your house keys in a pocket and not in a bag.
    • Wearing hoods, talking on the mobile and listening to earphones whilst out walking are hazardous for road safety and greatly reduces your ability to hear or see trouble ahead. Walk with confidence and look as though you’re on a mission.
    • If someone tries to follow you make for a public place, such as a shop or a restaurant or walk towards other people. Many places on Oxford Road are part of the safe place scheme, including the RNCM.
